ST. LOUIS COMMUNITY COLLEGE

FV/Project Associate II/Life Sciences, Post 2056

Responsibilities include:

This position will involve multitasking over a large variety of tasks that may include assisting in the operation of the Center for Plant and Life Sciences as well as managing all aspects of the educational outreach activities of the Center, including on- and off-site events and summer teacher workshops and student camps. The successful candidate will also promote the Center and St. Louis Community College by attending local area networking and workshop events, producing and updating flyers promoting the educational activities of the Center, and networking with local school districts for new event opportunities.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (must have a minimum of 90 credit hours and an additional two (2) years relevant experience), and over three (3) years of relevant, full-time experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Science Education, Agricultural Education, or Communications and three (3) years relevant, full-time experience

NEWLEAF SYMBIOTICS

Computational Biologist, Statistician Position

NewLeaf Symbiotics is seeking a highly-motivated individual for a Computational Biologist, Statistician position. The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for development and implementation of methods, software, visualizations and analysis of complex Genotype-Phenotype-Environment relationships in large datasets.

Responsibilities include:

Design, implementation, and application of statistical methods for analyses and visualization of massive genomic, phenotypic, and environmental datasets for both offline and web-based consumption.

Primary duties include implementation and ongoing refinement of offline and web-based software and databases targeted at analysis of genomic sequences, integrating genotype, phenotype, and environmental data, mining genomic/genetic associations, and data visualization.

The successful individual must enjoy working on a team as well as demonstrate the ability to manage and prioritize a variety of tasks individually. The candidate must possess excellent record-keeping and written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated experience in modern technologies including R, Shiny, Ruby, JavaScript, and SQL is required, and examples should be included in the application package. Experience with cloud-based services such as Amazon’s EC2 platform is preferred. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

Fermentation Scientist

New Leaf is looking for a Fermentation Scientist with experience in process development and downstream processing. The company headquarters and laboratories are located at the BRDG Park facility of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in St. Louis, Missouri. NewLeaf Symbiotics (NLS) is a venture-backed agricultural biotech company focused on providing biologically-based plant health products. NLS’ Prescriptive Biologics™ platform leverages the company’s extensive collection of plant-associated bacteria and a deep understanding of genomics to develop effective, environmentally responsible products.  The Fermentation Scientist will develop candidate products using a stage gated process in support of commercialization.  NewLeaf’s platform is designed to create products that increase yield and control pests in row crops, viticulture, silvaculture, turf, ornamentals, hydroponics, and the high value vegetable markets.

Product Development Responsibilities and Duties

  • Collaborate with R&D and Legal to insure a balance between patent portfolio advancement and Product Development (PD)
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic PD operating plans and budgets
  • Develop up and downstream processes: including fermentation, filtration, centrifugation, evaporation, drying, etc.
  • Conduct 5-batch fermentations compliant with GLP/GMP requirements for regulatory approval
  • Conduct fermentations for stability studies, tank mix compatibility studies, spray-ability, adjuvant compatibility and others to ensure the commercial viability of formulated products
  • 35% travel to contract manufacturing locations to transfer processes and supervise runs

Qualifications

  • Recognition of bacterial interaction between selected plant hosts, filamentous bacteria/fungi, and the abiotic forces that effect the plant rhizosphere and phyllosphere
  • Solid understanding of microbial physiology: bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and others
  • Hands-on experience operating laboratory fermenters: shake flask to production scale
  • Experience applying directed biosynthesis, fed-batch, and continuous culture techniques for improved yields of fermentation processes
  • Experience with neo-classical strain improvement programs with knowledge of metabolic engineering directed at improvements in biomass, functionality, and metabolite production
  • Experience with technical transfer of manufacturing process to contract manufacturing facilities

Position Requirements:

  • Degree(s) in microbiology, applied chemistry, or chemical engineering with 2+ years of experience
  • Experience with the development of biologically-based products for the food, agrichemical or specialty chemical industry
  • Experience with fermentation and formulation of microorganisms that produce natural products
  • Experience in technical transfer of manufacturing process to contract manufacturing facilities
  • Capable of delivering high quality scientific presentations: internal and external (scientific conferences)

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree(s) in microbiology/chemical engineering with industrial experience
  • Undergraduate technical degree (Chem. E), with MS or MBA and 5 years  industrial experience
  • Experience with agricultural field applications technology and formulations of biological products
  • A passion for sustainable agriculture and biological solutions

The incumbent will be hired at a level commensurate with their knowledge, skills and abilities. The salary range is competitive. SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

KWS is seeking a Research Associate to be a part of our world-class maize transformation pipeline.   A successful candidate will have maize cell and tissue culture experience, expertise in standard monocot transformation protocols, and a desire to innovate.  As a member of our team, you will have a key role in the design and execution of multiple experiments per week.  You will be part of a fast-paced environment where priorities shift rapidly.  We value your ideas and expertise, and want your help making the Gateway Research Center a worldwide center of excellence in transformation and gene editing.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct maize transformation and tissue culture experiments, under supervision, according to protocol with accuracy while meeting requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of novel protocols for gene delivery and plant regeneration.
  • Establish and maintain maize cell and tissue cultures.
  • Conduct molecular, anatomic and microscopic analyses of maize cells and tissues.
  • Design effective workflows, meet timelines and deadlines for multiple workflows and; adapt approaches to match shifting demands with hands-off supervision
  • Operate, maintain and clean equipment, maintain and/or order supplies and manage waste.
  • Comply with and participate in the development of work instructions, and maintain accurate records
  • Drive protocol development and optimization with clear focus on business advantage, under supervision.
  • Contribute to innovative strategies and research designs under supervision.
  • Identify problems and propose realistic and actionable solutions, driving solution implementation under supervision.
  • Contribute to an effective and action-oriented work environment and provide constructive feedback while contributing to a respectful, inclusive and motivating workplace culture.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent; or other education with at least 2 years of laboratory or research experience or an Associate’s Degree in a related field and 4 years of laboratory or research experience.
  • Ability to communicate and write clearly, concisely and accurately in English.
  • Ability to follow protocol, visually observe and clearly document and maintain laboratory records to generate reproducible results.
  • Demonstrated initiative, ability to learn quickly and success at working independently.
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States without sponsorship.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior academic or industry experience in monocot transformation.

Proven experience developing/improving plant cell and tissue culture protocols.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Scientific laboratory and office environment with exposure to greenhouses, lab equipment and chemicals. Standard work hours, however on limited occasions may require work on weekends or evenings due to participation in plant production activities.
