NEWLEAF SYMBIOTICS

Computational Biologist, Statistician Position

NewLeaf Symbiotics is seeking a highly-motivated individual for a Computational Biologist, Statistician position. The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for development and implementation of methods, software, visualizations and analysis of complex Genotype-Phenotype-Environment relationships in large datasets.

Responsibilities include:

Design, implementation, and application of statistical methods for analyses and visualization of massive genomic, phenotypic, and environmental datasets for both offline and web-based consumption.

Primary duties include implementation and ongoing refinement of offline and web-based software and databases targeted at analysis of genomic sequences, integrating genotype, phenotype, and environmental data, mining genomic/genetic associations, and data visualization.

The successful individual must enjoy working on a team as well as demonstrate the ability to manage and prioritize a variety of tasks individually. The candidate must possess excellent record-keeping and written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated experience in modern technologies including R, Shiny, Ruby, JavaScript, and SQL is required, and examples should be included in the application package. Experience with cloud-based services such as Amazon’s EC2 platform is preferred. Preferred qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.

Fermentation Scientist

New Leaf is looking for a Fermentation Scientist with experience in process development and downstream processing. The company headquarters and laboratories are located at the BRDG Park facility of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in St. Louis, Missouri. NewLeaf Symbiotics (NLS) is a venture-backed agricultural biotech company focused on providing biologically-based plant health products. NLS’ Prescriptive Biologics™ platform leverages the company’s extensive collection of plant-associated bacteria and a deep understanding of genomics to develop effective, environmentally responsible products.  The Fermentation Scientist will develop candidate products using a stage gated process in support of commercialization.  NewLeaf’s platform is designed to create products that increase yield and control pests in row crops, viticulture, silvaculture, turf, ornamentals, hydroponics, and the high value vegetable markets.

Product Development Responsibilities and Duties

  • Collaborate with R&D and Legal to insure a balance between patent portfolio advancement and Product Development (PD)
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategic PD operating plans and budgets
  • Develop up and downstream processes: including fermentation, filtration, centrifugation, evaporation, drying, etc.
  • Conduct 5-batch fermentations compliant with GLP/GMP requirements for regulatory approval
  • Conduct fermentations for stability studies, tank mix compatibility studies, spray-ability, adjuvant compatibility and others to ensure the commercial viability of formulated products
  • 35% travel to contract manufacturing locations to transfer processes and supervise runs

Qualifications

  • Recognition of bacterial interaction between selected plant hosts, filamentous bacteria/fungi, and the abiotic forces that effect the plant rhizosphere and phyllosphere
  • Solid understanding of microbial physiology: bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and others
  • Hands-on experience operating laboratory fermenters: shake flask to production scale
  • Experience applying directed biosynthesis, fed-batch, and continuous culture techniques for improved yields of fermentation processes
  • Experience with neo-classical strain improvement programs with knowledge of metabolic engineering directed at improvements in biomass, functionality, and metabolite production
  • Experience with technical transfer of manufacturing process to contract manufacturing facilities

Position Requirements:

  • Degree(s) in microbiology, applied chemistry, or chemical engineering with 2+ years of experience
  • Experience with the development of biologically-based products for the food, agrichemical or specialty chemical industry
  • Experience with fermentation and formulation of microorganisms that produce natural products
  • Experience in technical transfer of manufacturing process to contract manufacturing facilities
  • Capable of delivering high quality scientific presentations: internal and external (scientific conferences)

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree(s) in microbiology/chemical engineering with industrial experience
  • Undergraduate technical degree (Chem. E), with MS or MBA and 5 years  industrial experience
  • Experience with agricultural field applications technology and formulations of biological products
  • A passion for sustainable agriculture and biological solutions

Research Associate, Product Development

New Leaf Symbiotics (NLS) is looking for a research associate with experience in microbiology, plant associated microorganisms and/or production of microbes for industrial processes. NLS company headquarters and laboratories are located at the BRDG Park facility at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, in St. Louis, Missouri. NLS is a venture-backed agricultural biotech company focused on providing biologically-based products. NLS’ Prescriptive Biologics™ platform integrates the company’s extensive collection of plant-associated bacteria and a deep understanding of genomics to create effective, environmentally responsible products. NLS products are designed to improve plant health, increase yield, control pests, and have a positive impact on contemporary environmental concerns.


Research Associate Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Grow and harvest bacteria using aseptic technique to create and maintain research material as needed.
  • Assist with the development of new formulations for microbial products.
  • Assist with the creation of spray-dried powders, dry granules, seed treatment formulations, and stabilized liquid formulations; aqueous suspensions, SCs, ECs and micro-emulsions.
  • Conduct stability studies, tank mix compatibility studies, rain-fastness, spray-ability, adjuvant compatibility, and other studies to ensure the commercial viability of formulated products.
  • In collaboration with the Fermentation group assist with downstream processing experiments – filtration, centrifugation, evaporation, lyophilization, spray drying, granulation, fluidized bed, rheology, particle size analysis, etc.
  • Maintain detailed records of experimental data and perform preliminary data analysis.
  • Create and troubleshoot protocols as needed.
  • Collect data and perform analysis.
  • Assist with general lab maintenance duties including media and solution preparation, general equipment maintenance, cleanliness and organization of the laboratory, and dishwashing as needed.
  • Assist with other related lab and greenhouse projects as needed to help NewLeaf Symbiotics meet its objectives.

Requirements:

  • Degree(s) in Microbiology, Applied Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering with 2 or more years’ experience in a commercial or academic research laboratory environment.
  • 0-2 years industrial experience in development of biologically-based products in the food, agrichemical or specialty chemical industry.
  • Energetic and self-motivated individual able to work in a team environment with relentlessly progressing schedules.
  • Knowledge of general techniques and principles in microbiology and molecular biology.
  • Ability and desire to work independently as well as in a collaborative team-environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, problem solving skills, and detail-oriented.

Preferred:

  • Experience with fermentation and formulation of microorganisms that produce natural products.
  • A passion for sustainable agriculture and biological solutions.
  • Understanding of biological products including natural products chemistry and microbial physiology of bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and fungi.

KWS GATEWAY RESEARCH CENTER

Laboratory Information Management System Administrator

SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

The Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) Administrator will build technical workflow and lab processes to enable the collection of error free data for scientists and researchers. Uses extensive technical and database knowledge while working with colleagues who have a scientific background. Reports directly to the corporate office in Germany while working in St. Louis, MO.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Build workflow and lab processes in cooperation and under the direction of lab managers within our various research and quality labs throughout the company including persons in Germany.
  • Monitor quality of research documentation at KWS facilities in the US and supervise optimization of regional documentation processes.
  • Support implementation and optimization of research stewardship and quality management processes in the US.
  • Provide support of lab-processes by assuring a productive LIMS-operating system is in place, and ensure error-free data transfers by electronic data entry and interfaces.
  • Enable traceability of results and information to ensure lab data quality.
  • Coordinate the acquisition of LIMS related data entry devices and printers.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for LIMS and laboratory software configuration during audits. Provide answers to questions, regarding the LIMS or data entries, as needed, from lab workers in their daily working processes.
  • Continuously drive to improve LIMS processes.
  • Work with internal customers to understand their needs to develop useful digital workflows.
  • Direct specific laboratory projects from set-up to completion as needed.
  • Generate and create reports and attend departmental meetings and give presentations as needed.
  • Ensure Company handbook, Rules, Guidelines, Procedures and safety policies are followed and personal protective equipment is used correctly.
  • Occasionally travel and/or drive on behalf of the business.
  • Meet attendance requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent, in Agricultural Science, Biology, Engineering, Information Management or similar field of study.
  • Two, or more, years of lab experience working in AgTech, biotechnology, or similar industry.
  • Knowledge of LIMS or other databases.
  • Ability to organize and structure processes.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently as well as within in a team.
  • Ability to clearly communicate verbally and in writing concisely and accurately in English.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong desire and passion for team-based research that is demonstrated by specific examples from experience or education.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving history.
  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States without Sponsorship.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An advanced degree in Agricultural Science, Biology, Engineering, Information Management or similar field of study.
  • Proven Experience in building, configuration, implementation and administration of an LIMS system.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Scientific laboratory with exposure to experimental processes involving plants and chemicals. Flexible hours in response to the needs of the business. May spend time in greenhouses or fields.

Research Scientist-Molecular Biology and Intellectual Property

KWS is an innovative and long-established plant breeding and seed company with global headquarters in Germany. For more than 150 years, we have been breeding and marketing high-performance varieties for the modern farmer. Our crops include sugar beet, corn, and cereals, as well as oil seed crops and potatoes. The KWS Gateway Research Center in St. Louis, Missouri, has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist in the area of Molecular Biology and Intellectual Property.

SUMMARY/PURPOSE:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Build partnerships and work collaboratively with local and international colleagues in research and legal fields to support team objectives for enabling technology development.
  • Identify opportunities for intellectual property in plant molecular and cell biology, draft patent applications, design and execute experiments to generate data in support of patent filings
  • Drive innovation and manage work packages across research teams within a dynamic, fast-moving, international environment
  • Support managers to build a robust IP portfolio in plant molecular and cell biology; generate enabling data
  • Engage the external scientific community in the areas of molecular & cell biology, including gene editing and DNA break repair, to bring continuous innovation and improvement into company technology platforms and strategy
  • Mentor and train research staff in professional development and use of best practices
  • Create an engaging climate, provide direction, delegate, remove obstacles, and distribute assignments maintaining dialogue regarding work and results.

  • Expertise in molecular biology, including optimal design and rapid testing of various gene expression vectors, and their effects, in eukaryotic cells, for a variety of purposes.
  • Demonstrated success in development of molecular technology to enable project goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive innovation that leads to enabling intellectual property and patent filings.
  • Experience with patent analysis, patent application drafting, and interaction with legal personnel to support intellectual property protection.
